The Martial Art we train in is known as Kuniba-Ryu. Kuniba-Ryu is a composite style which blends the Martial Art of Karate (Kuniba-Ha Shito Ryu) with the Martial Arts of Judo, Jiu-Jitsu, and Aikido (Kuniba, Soke's personal interpretation, or "Ryu-Ha", of these arts, blended with Karate, is known as Kuniba-Ryu Goshin-Do).
In the beginning, students are taught the Karate "Ryu-Ha" (or, "style") of Shogo Kuniba, Soke. Due to his upbringing and family history, Kuniba, "Soke" (or, "Founder") was able to study many Martial Arts with some of the greatest teachers of his time in a variety of styles. Ironically, this is very similar to today's "modern" trend of mixed martial arts, or "MMA". Kuniba, Soke was a very early proponent--and pioneer--within the Traditional Japanese Martial Arts--of blending techniques, principles, and concepts from a variety of styles and systems in order to develop a complete, yet Traditional, Martial Art System.
As training progresses, students are taught the principles of Kuniba-Ryu Goshin-Do, which augment the students technical knowledge by familiarizing them with grappling and groundfighting techniques. Also, students have the opportunity to study and train in weapons (or, Kobudo, in Japanese) and Iai-Do (Sword Arts). Kuniba, Soke studied these Martial Arts as well, and integrated the practice of these arts into the overall curriculum of Kuniba-Ryu.
One important factor to note is that ANYONE can train in our Martial Art! The founder of our art, Kuniba, Soke, was a small man, only 5ft., 5in. tall, and about 135 lbs. However, he was easily able to demonstrate his art convincingly and effectively to much larger people--and occasional opponents who sought to challenge him. Because of his lifetime of study (over 50 years), he was able to teach and impart his Martial Art to tens of thousands of students across the World during his lifetime.
In keeping with the traditions of our Founder, Kuniba, Soke, and his designated successor, William H. Price, Soke, we guide students step-by-step in a safe, logical manner that allows students to progress at their own pace, in a non-competitive environment that seeks first and foremost to enhance students understanding of the techniques, and how their training can be applied outside the dojo to enhance their life and well-being.
